So this has been a LOoooong labor of love. I ordered the frame and hide back in mid February from the amazing folks at Shamanic Druidry. [link] Seriously they are very awesome do check them out.
I got distracted and busy and not to mention sick and was unable to work on it the second it all got here. I began work on it last week and wouldn't you know I got to work on this while we were blessed with the presence of the Pan Starrs comet. I finished it today on the spring equinox.
Its a pegged sami style drum. I hand carved each peg from local woods. 21 different woods in all. Each one corresponding to one of my runes. The frame is ash wood. The hide is Fallow Deer with wonderful natural spots. The handle is lightning struck poplar. The beater is made from hawthorn. The decorative cord is made from nettle.. yes nettle, that I hand dyed with walnuts. YES with nuts because I am out of my mind! All the wood parts have been treated with balm of Gilead infused oil.
The entire drum sounds amazing, SMELLS amazing (like a forest) In fact depending on the air temperature you can hear the sound of the different wood pegs depending on where you play on the hide. Some of the pegs even have moss and lichen on them still.
Its the perfect drum for a dryad. ^_^
EDIT: ERMAHGURD A DD! *faints* Okay I swear I will try and get back to everyone with questions! meanwhile umm go look at the rest of my gallery I guess. yeas.. do that!
Second EDIT: Details on buying. This exact drum is not for sale. BUT if you want me to make a drum for you similar to this, they can range 300-400 USD depending on size and materials and how far I am shipping it. Note me with details if you are interested. I have other goodies in my shop as well here -> [link]
Ooo, thats simply amazing! Great job, mon... It's GREAT to see an artwork done with such a passion and wisdom. You wrote that the drum smells like a forest... I like that part so much.. (What a pity that there is no chance to upload its scent on the internet... ) I believe you made a real forest spirit, very detailed, beautiful and strong...
i love the original idea for the handle and just the extra detail with the side runes this is amazing i actually get to have fun painting someones hand drum in about a week.
i havent painted a drum or made one before. i work at a native school and they offer a class to make a drum, but tradition is you gotta give the 1st one away... i dont wanna spend over 100$ for 2 drums lol
The drum is beautiful. Truly amazing. I'm almost more impressed however, with reading your novel of an Artist's Comment. I love the specific details you mentioned (which made me look back at the pictures several times) because they made the picture worth waaaaay more than a thousand words. More than a million words even. It's so cool. What do you plan to do with it? Is it a decorative piece, or do you have a use in mind?
Oh I make things to be loved and used. This will be happily played frequently here at home and out in the world, at festivals, and in the woods. Thank you so much for your compliments!
No problem. It makes me happy to see tangible things get DDs. Pictures are amazing... But the process that went into your drum was something probably based on ancient techniques that were used hundreds of years ago... I really love feeling connected to the past.
I feel the same way (I knit and sew and do costuming for my school's drama department). You can touch it and use it and smell it... It's not just a figment of your imagination, it's really there.
